Niamh Brennan first introduced the existing open access resources  and the possibilities connected with them, cf.  Romeo Sherpa. Many repositories can be found in the Registry of Open Access Repositories.   Then she showed how they are utilized in  the Trinity College in the Current Research Information System and TARA (Trinity’s Access to Rearch Archives) and what the benefits are to the Trinity Community. A further emphasis was placed on e-theses. All in all there was a wealth of information both to the newcomer and the experienced.

A phenomenological review of the different stages of academic career and the inherent information retrieval habit was goiven and the role of tle library in supporting research was stressed.

Update on RSS-Feeds of Journals TOC

March 18, 2009

In addition to a previous blog entry it seems highly desireable to include the “List of Journals with RSS Feeds” displayed on the Highwire Press page here.  More lists can be generated by starting a google search using “site:domain RSS” like this one “TOC site:www.bioone.org/ RSS“. It is  a little more work, as the feeds are not listed, but only the respective journal’s current TOC.  The RSS-feed icon on the same page will then allow to subscribe to the feed.

New Browsers

September 3, 2008

The Internet Explorer is now available here in its betaversion 8.1.  I started to download it and then stopped in the middle of the process, as it seemed to go deep into my PC. The Spybot-security check also made its complaints. Also there is some co-operation expected  for which I do not have he time at present. So I will just wait for the alphaversion.

Chrome by Google, in its betaversion available here,  on the other hand is not half as clumsy as the Internet Explorer and immediately imports all the bookmarks from Firefox . First tests I did left me with a good impression. it is particularly handy to be able to search with in the navigation bar.

For further information by Google Chrome itself see here.

Toc and RSS

July 25, 2008

There are two databases of journals’ TOC with RSS available which would well be worth the veterinary librarians’ interest, subjects not being limited to the veterinary field only:

  • Tictocs,  a database with 7,771 journals (June 25th, 2008), searchable by journal title ( or segment of it, even truncated *) or by publisher, maintained by a British consortium
  • Journals Feed Navigator which is just one application of the broader Feed Navigator, maintained by the Finnish National Library of Health Sciences – Terkko. It has various functionalities.

Purely veterinary titles are available here and here.
